Genre: Whimsical drama
Language: French with subtitles
Run-time: 104 minutes
Rating: R - Sexuality & brief violence
A whimsical French comedy by Jean-Pierre Jeunet that walks a fine line between sweetness and indulgence. It's a farce of broad physical gestures and wide-eyed expressions that could be from the silent era were it not for the sound. Jeunet and his characters show a playful innocence as they conduct a massive caper to right a wrong, like Ocean's Eleven on the Island of Misfit Toys.

Leads: Chi Cao, Joan Chen and Amanda Schull.
Director: Bruce Beresford
Genre: Drama
Language: English
Run-time: 117 minutes
Rating: PG
Mao's Last Dancer recounts the remarkable true story of Chinese ballet superstar Li Cunxin, who was plucked from poverty at a tender age to study dance, not fully comprehending the extraordinary journey he was about to embark on. A delicate, well-acted endeavour, director Bruce Beresford underlines every last emotion and, from the grit and toil of Li's journey, creates an engaging bio-pic.

Leads: Gemma Arterton, Roger Allam, Bill Camp, Dominic Cooper, Jessica Barden, Charlotte Christie
Director: Stephen Frears

Run-time: 111 minutes
Rating: R
Based on Posy Simmonds's graphic novel (itself loosely derived from Far From The Madding Crowd), Stephen Frears's Tamara Drewe centres on a sultry young journalist who returns to the local village where she grew up and sends three very different men into a tizzy. Fittingly, it's Britain's latest sex bomb Gemma Arterton breaking hearts in those short shorts.
Film 6

Leads: Aaron Johnson, Kristin Scott Thomas, David Threlfall, Josh Bolt, Ophelia Lovibond
Director: Sam Taylor-Wood
Genre: Drama
Language: English
Run-time: 98 minutes
Rating: R
NOWHERE BOY is a beautifully written, beautifully acted, sensitively directed biopic of the young John Lennon, directed by the renowned British artist, Sam Taylor-Wood. Set in a perfectly rendered 1950s Liverpool, the film shows a 17 year old Lennon groping toward the truth of why he lives with his Aunt Mimi rather than with his mum and dad, not to mention taking his first steps toward becoming a Beatle.
